‘The Marvels’ Declared as the Biggest Box-Office Flop of 2023 — Suffered a $237 Million Loss — World of Reel

Disney’s Box Office Woes: A Look at the Company’s Recent Struggles

Disney’s Struggles Continue as Box Office Flops Mount and Streaming Service Loses Subscribers

Disney has been facing a series of setbacks in recent years, with their stock prices plummeting and box office flops piling up. The latest blow comes in the form of a report from Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro, which lists the five biggest box office bombs of 2023 – and Disney is responsible for four of them.

“The Marvels,” “The Flash,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Wish,” and “Haunted Mansion” all failed to meet expectations, with losses totaling in the hundreds of millions. “The Marvels,” in particular, was a major disappointment, becoming the first MCU movie to not cross the $100 million mark domestically.

In a bid to explain the failures, Disney CEO Bob Iger indirectly blamed the pandemic and “The Marvels” director Nia DaCosta, the first black female director to helm an MCU movie. Iger claimed that DaCosta needed more supervision on set, but due to COVID restrictions, it was not possible.

Despite the attempts at damage control, Disney’s struggles seem to run deeper than just external factors. Some critics suggest that the audience may be growing tired of the same formulaic content from Disney, leading to a desire for something new and different.

As Disney pins its hopes on the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine” film to turn things around, the future remains uncertain for the entertainment giant. With streaming service subscribers dropping by the millions and box office losses mounting, Disney will need to make some major changes to regain their footing in the industry.
