Unveiling the Official Poster for the 77th Cannes Film Festival: A Tribute to Japanese Cinema
The Cannes Film Festival has revealed the official poster for its 77th edition, and it is a nod to cinematic history. The poster features a scene from the Japanese classic film Rhapsody in August, directed by Akira Kurosawa, which premiered out of competition at Cannes in 1991. The film tells the story of a grandmother who survived the Nagasaki bombing and passes on her faith in love and integrity to her grandchildren and American nephew.
This year’s Cannes festival seems to have a Japanese theme, as it was recently announced that Japanese anime house Studio Ghibli will receive an honorary Palme d’Or. This is the first time the prestigious award will be given to a company instead of an individual artist.
The Cannes Film Festival posters have always been iconic, ranging from classy to controversial. The 2024 poster will overlook the jury, led by Barbie director Greta Gerwig, as they judge the films in competition for the Palme d’Or. The festival kicks off on May 14 with Quentin Dupieux’s The Second Act starring Léa Seydoux and Vincent Lindon.
