Warner Bros Pictures and Sony Pictures: Box Office Battle Ahead for Furiosa and Garfield
Warner Bros Pictures and Sony Pictures are gearing up for a box office showdown this Memorial Day weekend. With Universal’s The Fall Guy falling short of expectations, all eyes are now on Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Mad Max prequel, Furiosa, and Sony/Alcon Entertainment’s Garfield.
According to tracking reports, Furiosa is expected to have a $40M-$50M domestic opening over the holiday weekend, while Garfield is projected to bring in $35M. Initially, experts believed the two films would have a closer race, but Furiosa seems to have the upper hand with its Imax and PLF screenings and a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Garfield, on the other hand, is targeting families and older adults, with strong unaided awareness and a solid first choice among women under 25. Furiosa, on the other hand, is resonating more with men over 25, with overall unaided awareness behind blockbuster films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner 2049.
The Memorial Day weekend box office record was set in 2022 by Top Gun: Maverick with $160.5M, and last year, Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid debuted with $118.8M. It remains to be seen if Furiosa and Garfield can surpass these numbers and bring some much-needed excitement back to the moviegoing experience. Stay tuned for more updates on this epic box office battle.
