Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny Star in Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ – Box Office Success and More!
In a surprising turn of events at the weekend box office, Alex Garland’s dystopian political action film “Civil War” emerged victorious over the new vampire film “Abigail.” Despite expectations that “Abigail” would take the lead, “Civil War” held strong in its second weekend, raking in $11 million for a total of $45 million domestically for indie studio A24.
“Abigail,” on the other hand, opened to $10.2 million, a respectable number considering its $28 million production cost. However, the horror genre often struggles overseas, with “Abigail” only earning $5 million from 62 markets for a global start of $15.2 million.
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind the reboot of the Scream franchise, “Abigail” follows the story of a group of criminals who kidnap a 12-year-old ballerina who happens to be a vampire.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” continued to dominate the box office, earning $9.8 million in its fourth weekend. The film has surpassed $170 million domestically and a whopping $485.2 million globally, with a significant $119 million coming from China.
Other notable films at the box office included Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” which opened to $9 million, and Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which earned $4.6 million for a domestic total of $179.9 million.
Overall, it was a slow weekend at the U.S. box office, with year-to-date revenue falling behind previous years. However, with summer on the horizon, Hollywood is hopeful for a turnaround in the coming months.
