Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Unfrosted’ Movie Review: A Look at the Hilarious Pop-Tart Origin Story
The new Netflix movie “Unfrosted” is creating quite a buzz, with Jerry Seinfeld’s fictionalized Pop-Tart origin story now available for streaming. Seinfeld not only stars in the film but also makes his feature directorial debut and co-wrote the screenplay with Spike Feresten, known for his work on the iconic sitcom “Seinfeld.”
One of the most memorable moments in the film involves a plot point where Kellogg’s cereal mascots boycott the company, fearing the Pop-Tart will make them irrelevant. This leads to a hilarious sequence where the mascots storm the company’s offices, reminiscent of the attack on the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.
Feresten explained that the inspiration for this sequence came from real-life events, including a strike at Kellogg’s and the Capitol insurrection. The goal was to create a funny and entertaining scene that would brighten the audience’s day.
Another standout moment in the film features “Mad Men” alums Jon Hamm and John Slattery pitching a salacious Pop-Tarts advertising campaign to Kellogg’s. Seinfeld was rewatching “Mad Men” during the pandemic, which inspired the writers to include this meta reference in the script.
Despite not getting permission from the brands mentioned in the film, Netflix supported the creative team throughout the process. The writers hired a clearance lawyer who advised them to proceed with the script, as audiences have an expectation of humor from Jerry Seinfeld rather than truth.
Overall, “Unfrosted” is a comedic and entertaining film that showcases Seinfeld’s talent both in front of and behind the camera. With a star-studded cast and clever writing, this movie is sure to delight audiences looking for a good laugh.
