Robin Williams’ Acts of Kindness on and off the Set of ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’
The beloved film ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ is making headlines once again, but this time for a heartwarming story behind the scenes. Lisa Jakub, who played Lydia Hillard in the 1993 comedy, recently shared a touching anecdote about her co-star Robin Williams going above and beyond for her.
During a podcast reunion with her fellow ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ co-stars Mara Wilson and Matthew Lawrence, Jakub revealed how Williams came to her defense when her school in Canada decided to cut ties with her due to her filming commitments. Despite the efforts to continue her education while on set, the school sent a note asking her not to return.
Jakub recalled how devastated she was by the news, but Williams, who passed away in 2014, stepped in to help. He wrote a letter to her principal, advocating for her to continue pursuing her education while working on the film. Although the principal framed the letter and displayed it in the office, they did not allow Jakub to return to school.
In addition to this touching gesture, Lawrence shared that Williams also wrote him a letter of recommendation to help him get into the University of Southern California. The camaraderie and support among the cast members of ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ extended beyond the screen, showcasing the bond they shared during filming.
Directed by Chris Columbus, ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ follows Williams as he disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children after a divorce. The film was not only a box office success but also won the Best Makeup Oscar at the 1994 Academy Awards.
The story of Robin Williams’ kindness and generosity towards his co-stars on the set of ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ serves as a reminder of the impact he had on those around him, both on and off-screen.
